Aug 04, 2023Try The 'Ripper' At NJ's Most 'Old School' Restaurant | Across New Jersey, NJ Patch
CLIFTON, NJ - Many times, simplicity goes hand-in-hand with nostalgia. New Jersey's entry into loveFOOD's 2025 ranking of the top old-school restaurants around the United States shows this connection is alive and well.
Comfort foods, like burgers and fries, or apple pie, are staples of national American chains and plenty of locally-owned small businesses. Rutt's Hutt in Clifton, named as New Jersey's winner, takes the theme of deep-fried and combines it with another fan favorite at ballparks and barbecues alike: the hot dog.
Known as "rippers" due to the hot oil used that causes the casings to burst, Rutt's has been serving the North Jersey community since 1928. Stepping inside the restaurant, it feels like you are roaring back decades, as much of the furniture and decor is still the same.
The ripper-style brings with it a "secret-recipe" spiced relish, but if a more subdued sling is your thing, Rutt's lightens the flame on another one of their favorites: the "In-And-Out" style dog. This means it is only dropped in the hot oil for a brief time. You can also get your dog fried heavy, leaving it effectively charred black.
Rutt's Hutt is located at 417 River Road, and opens everyday at 8 a.m.
The loveFOOD rankings are based on verified user reviews, awards and accolades won by the businesses. The online food journal also relies on the first-hand experience of their team when building their lists.
